پس از زایمان و پایدار بودن علائم افسردگی، مادر و اطرافیانش میفهمند که
مسئلهای جدیتر از خستگی در حال رخ دادن است.
افسردگی بعد از زایمان درمان نشده میتواند برای ماهها یا
بیشتر باقی بماند و گاهی به اختلال افسردگی مزمن تبدیل شود.
حتی در صورت درمان نیز افسردگی بعد از زایمان خطر دورههای افسردگی اساسی در فرد را افزایش میدهد.
